Under attack for the governments U-turn on Kohinoor diamond issue,BJP on Wednesday claimed the Narendra Modi dispensation has revised the stand of previous governments on the issue and will make all efforts to bring it back from the UK.The Indian government has again reversed its position on whether it wants the U.K. to return the Kohinoor diamond, saying it wants the gem returned in an “amicable manner.The gem was in the possession of Maharajah Ranjit Singh of Punjab when Britain says the Kohinoor was obtained legally in 1849 as the English annexedPunjab after the Second Anglo-Sikh War.Punjab was divided between Pakistan and India when British colonial rule ended in 1947. Courts in both countries are hearing cases over the diamond. The nonprofit All India Human Rights and Social Justice Front in March took the government to court seeking the gemstone’s return.Nadir Shah was assassinated in 1747 and his empire disintegrated. After his death, the Kohinoor came into the acquisition of one of his generals, "Thus, it should be reaffirmed that the government of India has not yet conveyed itsviews to the court, contrary to what is being misrepresented," it said.Ahmad Shah Durrani. One of his descendents, Shah Shuja Durrani gave the diamond toRanjit Singh of Punjab, who in return helped Durrani win back the throne of Afghanistan In 1849, the British conquered Punjab and the Lahore treaty was proclaimed. One term in the treaty stated that: The gem called Kohinoor which was taken from Shah Shuja-ul-Malik by Maharaja Ranjit Singh shall be surrendered by the Maharajah of Lahore to the Queen of England.The Indian government made a u-turn on the Kohinoor issue saying it will make all efforts to bring back the valued diamond. The government had said in the Supreme Court that the diamond was neither stolen nor forcibly taken by the British rulers but it was given to them by the erstwhile rulers of Punjab. In a statement on Tuesday, the government claimed it has not yet conveyed its views to the court “contrary to what is being misrepresented” in the media.
